Conference Theme

ICED24 will address the roles and responsibilities of educational developers in advancing higher education ecosystems that serve to enable learners to build competencies for the 21st century and beyond.

Higher education (HE) ecosystems are complex, with multiple players and spaces that influence learning and how it happens. These ecosystems center three key elements—learners, facilitators of learning, and programs—and how these elements interact in terms of institutional settings, learner engagement, academic/professional development, collegial engagement, regulators and policy makers, the community and industry as well as other external stakeholders and societal factors. Educational developers are well positioned to influence and contribute to these HE ecosystems and promote collaboration and cooperation among different stakeholders to help learners become critical thinkers and problem solvers. This conference will explore and generate knowledge to inform ecosystems that best support learners in developing the competencies that the world needs.

Through this exploration, session facilitators could address any of these questions:

  • How have HE ecosystems shifted: what are the lessons learned that we should retain and build on?
  • How should these ecosystems be shifted next?
  • What knowledge and competencies do our learners most need and how do faculty effectively support their development?
  • What knowledge and competencies do faculty and other facilitators of learning most need?
  • What learning assessments hold the most promise?
  • How best can emerging technologies be integrated to help students develop needed competencies and enhance educational outcomes?
  • How do we ensure equitable access and positive educational experiences for all learners?
  • How do we support the health and resilience of all in higher education ecosystems?
  • How do we encourage faculty and senior administrators to support and nurture the learning-focused elements of their higher education ecosystem?
  • What system-level actions or initiatives best enable agile and responsive HE ecosystems?
  • What competencies do educational developers need to engage meaningfully and successfully in current and future HE ecosystems?
Call for Abstracts

The desired proposals will address the theme of creating meaningful higher education ecosystems that promote the development of key competencies required in the future of work and the roles and responsibilities of educational and academic developers in advancing these ecosystems. The abstracts shall align themselves to the conference theme and relate to one or more of the questions posed.

PAPERS

This format addresses participants who wish to report findings from their research on educational development. Contributions may be empirical as well as theoretical.

Paper sessions are simultaneous, themed sessions included throughout the programme, with three presentations per session. Each presenter is allocated 15 minutes for the oral presentation followed by 10 minutes of discussion and questions from the audience. The presentation is typically based on a single original research study that is theoretically relevant and methodologically sound, and which at the same time inspires critical discussion and engagement with educational development topics.

Paper presentations take place in 90 minute sessions. A moderator will coordinate the session and facilitate a 10-15 minute discussion across each presented paper at the end of the session.

WORKSHOP

WORKSHOP

This interactive format mainly addresses the demonstration of novel aspects of educational development practices and strategies.

Workshops last 90 minutes and are opportunities to facilitate a conversation and/or to demonstrate effective and novel educational development practices. Creative and engaging workshops are encouraged, and diverse set-ups are welcome. The workshop format is highly interactive and oriented towards the active involvement of the participants.

The presentation should be based on practical experience and research-based knowledge related to educational development and involve a demonstration of methods, principles, tools, etc.

The Workshops shall feature a maximum of two facilitators. Indicate if you will choose to facilitate a workshop. Each facilitator will have 20 minutes of presentation before engagement of the audience and 25 minutes to engage the audience. There will be a moderator allocated to each workshop.

DIGITAL POSTER

DIGITAL POSTER

This format is a short oral presentation and discussions of experiences, interventions or research within the field of educational development. All posters shall be in digital format and will be allocated an e-space. The papers shall be presented in a world café style – after the set time, a group will move to the next poster presentation. Each presenter will have a 5-minute presentation followed by 5 minutes discussion and questions from the audience. The pitch-poster session is thematized according to the sub themes of the conference.

A pitch-poster session is a lively and facilitated standing/walking session of 90 minutes duration with 7-8 pitch-posters in each session. A moderator will facilitate the presentation of a series of 8 posters within the conference theme and subthemes.

SYMPOSIUM

SYMPOSIUM

This format is a gathering of up to four participants, who present their field of work within a specific topic.

A symposium lasts 90 minutes and serves to explore a topic from different perspectives. It consists of short presentations of 10 minutes combined with joint discussions.

We encourage participants to use the symposium as an opportunity to engage in partnerships across contexts and disciplines. Both the added value of the symposium format and the plan for ensuring interaction with the audience should be described in the abstract.

A symposium should feature a maximum of four presenters and a moderator; these should be named in the submission. All presenters and the moderator must register for the conference.

KARIBU CAFÉ

KARIBU CAFÉ

There will be time allocated for participants to share a story based on the subthemes. The story shall be 5 minutes long.

Karibu Cafe: These will follow a Pecha Kucha stories format through face to face or recorded sessions telling a brief concise but reflective story of the impacts they are making in the field. “Pecha Kucha”—is a presentation format that requires a speaker to deliver 20 seconds of commentary per slide with pictures only (NO TEXT) for 20 consecutive, automatically advancing slides. The total presentation time for a PechaKucha presentation is 6 minutes and 40 seconds. PechaKucha, means “the sound of conversation” in Japanese and is an innovative and impactful storytelling tool that is increasingly gaining popularity.

PANEL DISCUSSION

PANEL DISCUSSION GUIDELINES

The panel discussion fosters collaboration, new perspectives and professional growth. The moderator guides the discussion around the theme by engaging industry thought leaders in dialogue based on the conference theme. The aim is to provoke thinking and well-rounded discussion to learn and get new ideas. If you are interested in facilitating a panel discussion, you will be required to invite panelists.

Panel discussions shall be 90 minutes in total.

HYBRID OPPORTUNITY

HYBRID OPPORTUNITY

When all paper abstracts are submitted and reviewed, the organizing committee and a review panel will select which papers would be suitable for a hybrid format. A hybrid format is not identical with just streaming. It is more advanced. It includes an interactive discussion with onsite participants as well as online participants following the presentation.

A chairperson will facilitate the interaction with onsite as well as remote participants during the session. The hybrid paper sessions will be recorded and subsequently made available online.
